Loneliness linked to Health risks

Scientific research has found loneliness in older adults is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke (Hawkley et al, 2006 Psychology and Aging, 21, 152-164).

Professor John Cacioppo, University of Chicago, co-author of 'Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection'  reports that the impact of loneliness on health is comparable to high blood pressure, a lack of exercise, obesity or smoking (Cacioppo & Patrick, Norton & Co, New York: 2008).

Lindsay Doig FCPA

President of Life Activities Clubs Victoria, Lindsay Doig, has set his Board a target to reach as many areas of Victoria as possible in a drive to encourage communities to form social networks which will address social isolation and related issues.

"This is the reason the organisation formed 40 years ago. If we can keep people healthy in mind and body, socially and intellectually engaged, they will likely live longer and enjoy life much more, greatly reducing the impact of ageing on community resources into the bargain. Our focus is on improving the quality of life!"
